A word of caution about vanity presses

A vanity press is “a publishing house that publishes books at the author’s expense — called also vanity publisher.”39

A word of caution is in order. As you enter the publishing world, you need to be aware that scams exist. A classic example is the vanity press. Some people will try to fool writers by waving the small or indie press banner. But, make no mistake, a vanity press by any other name is rotten to the core.

These unscrupulous scoundrels prey on a writer’s vanity. Some writers want to see their name in print so bad that they will pay for the privilege. Although self-publishing with reputable companies such as Amazon’s CreateSpace is readily available and affordable, many writers turn to vanity publishing because they feel it makes them appear more “legitimate” in the eyes of readers.

I am an avid reader, but I rarely check the publisher of a book I am reading (or am interested in buying). Personally, I prefer a nicely written self-published piece over a poorly-written and unedited vanity release any day.

According to The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published, a vanity press will:

• Charge you to publish your work (including the cost of design, layout, and printing)

• Not offer any advances or royalties

• Retain all rights to your work

• Have absolutely no incentive to market your book

As the authors put it, “A publisher who doesn’t actually put money in your pocket shouldn’t be taking it out, then keeping all the proceeds.”40

In The Fine Art of Self-Publishing, Mark Levine writes that one of the major differences between vanity and self-publishing is the self-published author publishes a book in a “. . . strategic, well-thought-out, and well-informed way.”41 Vanity press publishers are able to thrive because they know deep down inside some people are vain or conceited. These “authors” simply want to see their name in print. They could care less if the finished book is poorly designed, has a confusing plotline, or is riddled with grammatical errors. They are willing to pay for the privilege of being a published author under a publishing imprint. The “publisher” cares about one thing only — separating dopes from their hard-earned money. They may “edit” your book (for a fee) but you can bet the final product will not be edited properly.
